TITLE:  Lead Nurse- Elementary

LOCATION: TBD                     

 

JOB GOAL: To lead nurses in the provision of direct nursing services to students and staff members, and to maximize health and wellness in the school community.  All duties are performed in accordance with district / state Board of Education policies and procedures and state law regarding the Nurse Practice Act.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Possesses sufficient strength, endurance, and skill to provide direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness, and emergency care to students and staff guided by the nursing process and in accordance with professional standards, school policy and procedures, and state and local mandates
  • Performs CPR and use an AED (if available) as needed
  • Administers medication with appropriate documentation
  • Performs nursing procedures within their scope of practice
  • Maintains accurate medical records to assure compliance with state mandates including immunizations, physical examinations, and medical conditions, and the related archival responsibilities
  • Performs mandated screening procedures for vision and hearing
  • Provides follow-up evaluations on students as required
  • Makes appropriate assessment and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter
  • Monitors compliance of school health program with federal, state and local laws, regulations and policies
  • Manages health room efficiently
  • Prepares health reports for supervisor and health department
  • Collaborates with other agencies in designing and providing services to our students
  • Collaborates with teachers regarding health education and the state curriculum (K-12)
  • Serves as a resource person on health issues
  • Provides staff development on health-related topics for school staff
  • Participates in the development of the school emergency health and crises plan
  • Delegates, monitors, and evaluates aides/assistants/staff members in assigned nursing procedures
  • Identifies students with special health care needs
  • Develops emergency action plans for students at risk of medical crises at school or during a school function
  • Monitors individual health care plans (IHP) for students who need invasive procedures performed during the school day
  • Provides health related consultation as a member of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) team
  • Bills Medicaid for nursing services provided to students with school health services on their IEP
  • Works an 8 hour duty day in the location or locations assigned by the supervisor
  • Receives calls from nurses regarding absences and contact nursing agencies to fill the absences
  • Provides orientation to agency nurses when they are placed in a building
  • Collaborate with principals on the practices of the school nurses and provide input for the principals to consider in conducting the performance evaluation of school nurses
  • Provides orientation to newly hired nurses
  • Provides CPR Training
  • Insures that nurses are billing Medicaid for services in students’ IEPs
  • Provides training to nurses completing Time and Effort logs for specialized services provided to students with disabilities
  • Maintains and updates orientation and resource manual for nurses
  • Develops and maintains nursing protocols of care which address procedures carried out in school buildings
  • Provides training for school staff who are assigned to perform medical procedures or monitor students with health needs such as food allergies, diabetes, and seizure disorders
  • Observes the health service area to ensure compliance with state and county regulations
  • Observes and provide feedback on the practice of the school nurses to ensure appropriate patient care, use of universal precautions and proper safety procedures, as well as proper implementation of the required screening programs
  • Works with the Health Department as necessary in managing infectious illness outbreaks
  • Acts as a liaison with community providers for a range of services addressing child and adolescent health issues
  • Collaborates with administrators in the identification of qualified School Nurse candidates during the interview and selection process
  • Facilitates professional development for nurses

Qualifications

  • Meets the employment qualifications set forth by the Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education and the Kansas State Department of Education
  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in Kansas
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation program completion
  • Maintain CPR status according to American Heart Association Guidelines.
  • Experience in school nursing preferred
  • Computer literacy and competency in use of existing technology preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, professional judgment, oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with multiple stakeholders
  • Demonstrated skills in professional development facilitation
  • Physical and emotional ability to perform required work and move about as needed in the fast-paced, highly intensive school environment

COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION

  • Maintains communication with school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students.
  • Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.

 

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  186 days plus 10 days

 

SALARY:      Based on KCKPS Salary Schedule        

 

FLSA STATUS:     EXEMPT

 

REPORT TO:        Director of Special Education

 

EVALUATION:     Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board of Education policy on administrator evaluation
