LOCATION: North Central Office

 

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students. With a Head Start program, three preschools, 30 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, the district serves a wonderfully diverse mixture of students. A remarkable 62 different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. To serve those students, the district employs approximately 3,650 staff, including more than 1,600 teachers.

JOB GOAL:  To educate, mentor build relationships with students, staff, and community, develop partnerships with school district and community stakeholders, and to enforce district policies, local, and state laws.                                                                         

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • As a first responder the LEO must possess sufficient strength, endurance, and skill to provide direct services, first aid and emergency care to students and staff guided by administration and the school nurse nursing process and in accordance with professional standards, school policy and procedures, and state and local mandates.
  • Must be able perform to CPR and use an AED (if available)
  • Report/support the school and/or Truancy Officer in investigating reports of Truancy
  • Support the school in contacting students and parents of students who are chronically absent and such other absent students as directed by the principal
  • Contact parents or legal guardians to verify residence in the school district and/or attendance zone
  • Patrol assigned buildings and grounds to prevent theft, vandalism and illegal entry
  • Conduct routine inspection of doors, windows, and gates to determine that they are secure
  • Confront and question alleged unauthorized persons in the school building or on school grounds
  • Investigate and report all alleged violations of Local, State, and Federal law.
  • Investigate and report alleged violations of school district rules and regulations and school code of conduct as requested by the school principal.
  • Contact local police when/if needed for additional support and file such reports as are appropriate
  • Provide security for extra-curricular activities which occur outside of the normal instructional day. Obtain additional officers to work activities when additional help is needed
  • Attend school functions as directed by the Chief of Police, Deputy Chief or Sergeants making assignments.
  • File all Offense Reports and related Incident Reports for all cases of criminal activity or misconduct in assigned schools, or within the district.
  • Participate with other attendance, and security officers and LEO’s in district wide security efforts as directed by Chief of Police of designee.
  • Must have transportation to travel to elementary schools to assist as necessary
  • Must demonstrated customer-centric skills, greeting and handling of the parents, employees, students and visitors to the building, both adults and children
  • Perform such other duties as may be requested by the Chief of Police, Deputy Chief, Sergeants, Principals or other immediate supervisors in the general areas of attendance, security or pupil and staff services

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a Citizen of the United States.
  • Must be at least 21 years old to apply.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have a valid KLETC or other Class A Basic Law Enforcement Training Certificate (recognized by KS CPOST) and/or current Kansas CPOST certification or eligible to attend and successfully complete the 14 week Basic Law Enforcement Training Program at KLETC.
  • Must be a least 5’2” in height (KSA 44-1110) and able to meet minimum health and fitness standards.
  • Must pass a drug and alcohol screen, physical, weapons qualification course and psychological exam.
  • Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certification in CPR, First Aid and AED.
  • Previous training or coursework in law enforcement procedures.
  • Experience successfully working as a Law Enforcement Officer.
  • Experience working as a Campus Police Officer or School Resource Officer.

COMMUNICATION/ORGANIZATION:

Maintains communication with school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the needs of students. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.

Works involves physical effort. Physical agility is required to access all types of areas. Regularly required to walk, run, stand, jump, climb, stoop, crouch, kneel, and climb a ladder/fence/stairs; must be able to access all levels of a building/structure. Manually operates various tools, equipment, office equipment, and law enforcement devices. Must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 60 pounds. May be required to physically restrain person(s) during detainments and/or arrests using standard law enforcement procedures. Required to detect odors and have temperature sensitivity. Communicates verbally and in writing. Eyesight, including corrected eyesight, with regards to close vision, distance vision, color vision and depth perception is required to perform the job. A campus officer must be both physically and mentally fit when reporting for duty

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILL: Working knowledge of the statutes, local laws, law enforcement rules and regulations, and the court system. Thorough knowledge of rules of conduct as they pertain to a school law enforcement officer carrying out duties (i.e., detain, search and seizure, counseling, use of force, etc.). Thorough knowledge of Kansas public school law and procedures; school facilities; school equipment; and school operations. Knowledge of the rules and regulations which govern the use of force, detainment, and other emergency tactics when attempting to apprehend volatile and/or fleeing students and visitors.  Ability to enforce the public school law and board of education policy impartially and to make sound judgments under stressful situations. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in general or detailed instructions. Ability to analyze and interpret laws, board policy, rules regulations, standards, and procedures, and apply them to specific situations and cases. Ability to conduct thorough administrative and criminal investigations into various aspects of school matters presented on a case-by-case basis. Ability to work in a high stress environment on a regular basis. Ability to remain calm, concentrate and perform all responsibilities in a competent manner at all times Good problem solving skills. Skill in operating the above mentioned tools and equipment

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential/ functions of this job. Work is performed inside and outside the property with exposure to inclement weather and unpredictable crisis situations.  Flexible schedules for evenings, weekends, and overtime may be required.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:   261 day position

 

SALARY:    Based on the Kansas City Kansas Salary Scale.

 

FLSA STATUS:  Non-Exempt, Hourly     

            

REPORT TO:  Chief of Police; Responsive to Principal Requests and Supervision
