TITLE: TECHNOLOGY SERVICES STUDENT INTERN

 

LOCATION: NORTH CENTRAL OFFICE

 

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students. With a Head Start program, three preschools, 30 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, the district serves a wonderfully diverse mixture of students. A remarkable 62 different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. To serve those students, the district employs approximately 3,650 staff, including more than 1,600 teachers.

To help our students achieve this goal, the district is implementing a district-wide initiative called Diploma+.

 

JOB GOAL: To build linkages to Information Technology occupations for entry level, technical, and professional careers related to the design, development, support, and management of hardware, software, multimedia, communication, and systems integration services.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Help Desk

  • Answer phone calls from staff regarding issues with district technology, including computers, phones, network, Internet access, audio/visual, and administrative and instructional software.
  • Assist with district events, such as centralized enrollment, student laptop deployments, etc.

 

Computer Repair

  • Respond to user work orders and complete in a timely manner for the purpose of maintaining efficient technology operations across the district.
  • Troubleshoot and repair laptops, desktops, broken PC hardware and peripherals, storage devices, printers, PC labs, etc.

 

Networking

  • Assist in maintaining all network equipment including routers, switches, servers, phones, wireless, data circuits, and minor data cabling repair.

 

Audio/Visual

  • Inspect, diagnose and repair malfunctioning audio-visual equipment.
  • Provide audio-visual equipment support for instructional staff.
  • Help with minor installations of cabling and AV equipment.

 

Programming

  • Develop, create, and modify district software (dynamic data driven Windows or Web applications)
  • Define the goals of the system and devise flow charts and diagrams describing logical operational steps of programs.
  • Conduct stress testing of programs and software applications to ensure accuracy and efficacy.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Must be a KCKPS student or 2018-2019 graduating senior
  • Must have at least a 2.0 GPA  
  • Able to use MS Office 2016 and Google Docs
  • Organized and detail-oriented
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with others
  • Complete the application and interview process

COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION:  Maintain communication with school personnel to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students. Utilize existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.

 

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and handle a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Specific skill-based competencies required to perform the functions of the job satisfactorily include: operating standard office equipment including using a variety of software applications; planning projects; preparing and maintaining accurate records; customer service skills; and written and oral communication.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. The employee must occasionally lift items 35 lbs. alone, with assistance of 50 lbs. such as cases of computer parts, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Two cohorts; 4 weeks each, beginning Monday, June 3, 2019 – Thursday, June 27, 2019 and Monday, July 1, 2019 – Thursday, July 25, 2019.

 

SALARY:              $7.25 per hour         

    

FLSA STATUS:        Non-Exempt

 

REPORT TO:        TIS Manager or Supervisor    

       

EVALUATION:      Performance for this position will be evaluated in accordance with the Board of Education policy on evaluation.
