The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students. With a Head Start program, three preschools, 30 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, the district serves a wonderfully diverse mixture of students. JOB GOAL: Under the general supervision of the Coordinator of Buildings & Grounds and is

responsible for the uninterrupted and comfortable operation of

the school building, ensuring that standards of cleanliness, sanitation, safety and

security are met. Also responsible for carrying out administrative tasks required

to maintain and operate the building to the required standards.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains the cleanliness of the building and grounds in all respects.
  • Ensures the maintenance of proper instructional environment, including temperature, ventilation and building safety.
  • Schedules all maintenance activities so as not to interfere with any curricular or extra-curricular activities; during normal duty hours, makes the school and its facilities available as the building administrator directs.
  • Cooperates with staff and students to harmoniously achieve the purposes of the school.
  • In cooperation with the Building Administrator, advises the Shop Office of repair and maintenance actions required for building equipment. Keeps the Coordinator of Buildings and Grounds informed of incidents requiring action, such as fires and other acts of vandalism, and follows up with the Building and Grounds Departments and the Maintenance Departments when such problems have or have not been completed satisfactorily.
  • Directs and trains assigned staff.
  • Carries out preventive maintenance as directed, and assists the trades in maintaining the building and equipment requiring scheduled servicing.
  • Maintains preventive maintenance logs and other records as required.
  • Performs related duties as required for the daily operations of the school.
  • Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy. All outside entry doors remain locked during hours of building occupancy.
  • Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured. And that all lights (except those left on for safety reasons) are turned off.
  • Meets food delivery truck, assists in receiving food, hot lunch, and milk delivery.
  • Removes snow and sand steps and walks as needed.
  • Performs any other reasonable custodial duties assigned by Supervisors

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Supervisory ability; six months of custodial experience preferred.

A program of self-development, most desirable.
A willingness to work overtime as required, to ensure that extra-curricular and school-rental requirements are satisfied, and when emergency situations arise.
Ability to communicate with the Building Administrator, school staff, and persons at all levels in the school community so that the necessary support requirements for educational programs may be provided.
The requirements for technical knowledge will vary with the classification of the school and the complexity of building equipment.
Knowledgeable of operation and maintenance of equipment used in custodial work.

Knowledgeable of the application and limitations of various cleaning supplies. Knowledgeable of the care and cleaning of various materials.

Knowledgeable of the skills in various cleaning methods and procedures.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Skilled in working with people and in developing satisfactory relationships among custodial personnel.
Skilled in record keeping..

COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION: Maintains communication with school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students.

Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.

Performs other related work as required.

 

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, stand and talk or hear. Is directly responsible for students’ safety, work output, and well-being. Works both inside and outside. Will be required to work extended hours in cold weather, as needed.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:  Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents, and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  261 days duty year

 

SALARY:                  Based on USD 500 salary schedule

 

FLSA STATUS:       HOURLY, NON-EXEMPT

 

REPORT TO: Coordinator of Buildings & Grounds, Building Administrator

 

EVALUATION:  Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation and Professional Personnel.
