TITLE:  Parent Liaison

 

LOCATION: Grant Elementary

 

JOB GOAL:

Under the direct supervision of the School Principal and guidance of the USD500 Family Advocate System Coordinator, the Parent Liaison will work to establish communication, relationships and maintain mutual understanding among school, community and home.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Act as a liaison between the home and the school, enhancing the relationship between parents and the school.
  • Support teachers/advocates in efforts to build relationships, fulfill goals of Family Advocate System.
  • Provide information to building staff on parent involvement programs.
  • Provide monthly report to district Parent Involvement departments.
  • Maintain a continuous flow of information to the building principal.
  • Provide parents with information about community services, school supplies assistance, immunization services, etc.
  • Assist parents in removing potential barriers to successful school enrollment, such as obtaining school records, birth certificates, and immunization records, etc.
  • Coordinate mini workshops with building staff for parents.
  • Provide information to parents and recruit parents for Parent Involvement events.
  • Telephone parents, make home visits and maintain a list of all participating parents.
  • Be available to assist parents during conferences and other meetings.
  • Create or assist with distribution of parent newsletters.
  • Attend faculty meetings.
  • Attend monthly meetings for in-service, provided by the Family Advocate System Coordinator.
  • Coordinate school tours and orientation sessions for new parents.
  • Conduct surveys for parent needs.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written

Strong organizational skills

Parent from school community who has worked with the school and has strong contacts with community organizations preferred

 

 

COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION: Maintains communication with school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students.

Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.

Performs other related work as required.

 

 

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, stand and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  The employee must occasionally push items of 50 pounds such as pushing on a bike ore wheelchair, or moving/rearranging furniture.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:  Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

 

 TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:        School year; 186 day contract dependent on funding availability

 

SALARY:    Based on the USD #500 Salary Schedule

 

FLSA STATUS:    NON-EXEMPT, HOURLY 

 

 

REPORT TO:   School Principal for all building oriented activities. Family Advocate System Coordinator for information and support of programs and activities, and staff development.

 

 

EVALUATION:         Performance of this position will be in accordance with the Board of Education policy on evaluation.
