JOB TITLE:    Monitor - Recovery Room/Short Term Suspension

 

LOCATION:   John F. Kennedy

 

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students. With a Head Start program, three preschools, 29 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, the district serves a wonderfully diverse mixture of students. A remarkable 62 different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. To serve those students, the district employs approximately 3,650 staff, including more than 1,600 teachers.

To help our students achieve this goal, the district is implementing a district-wide initiative called Diploma+.

 

JOB GOAL:   

The Recovery Room is designed to help students with their behavior so they can become better learners as well as promote a learning environment at the school that does not allow fighting, inappropriate language, and other unacceptable behaviors.

It’s a positive program based upon early behavior intervention strategies which helps the student get control of his/her behavior, so learning can be enhanced for themselves as well as all the other students. 

The students that come to the Recovery Room do not have chronic behavior problems, they are being held accountable for their behavior that interrupts learning.

 

RECOVERY ROOM GOALS:

  • Commitment by the school to manage behavior
  • Define and communicate expectations and rules
  • An instructional component for teaching students self-control
  • A support plan to address the needs of students that continue to interrupt learning

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Discuss why student was sent to the recovery room
  • Complete a think sheet
  • Listen to the side of the student
  • Develop a plan for the student to re-enter the class, by helping them take and accept the responsibility of their behavior
  • Make phone calls to parents about continuous misbehaviors
  • Set up and attend parent conferences when necessary
  • Help students with class work when needed
  • Conflict situations
  • Help teachers with re-entry process
  • Triage
  • Keep a record of all students that come to the recovery room, reasons and teacher that sent them
  • Individual Behavior Learning Packet provides constructive, positive learning experience for students that broke class rules

QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 60 college hours, A.A. Degree Preferred
  • Previous classroom or instruction experience
  • BIST Training Preferred
  • Mediator
  • Effective rapport with Students, Staff and Administration
  • Effective organizational skills

COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION: Maintains communication with school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties. Performs other related work as required.

 

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:   Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:   186 days

 

SALARY:  Based on the current Salary Schedule of the KCKPS.

 

FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt; Hourly

 

Reports To:   Building Principal

 

PERFORMANCE EVALUATION:  Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the Board of Education Policy on evaluations.
