TITLE: Executive Director of Operations
LOCATION: Central Office and Training Center
The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students and 60+ different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.
With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers.
JOB GOAL:
The Executive Director of Operations, reporting directly to the Chief Operations Officer (COO), will support the day-to-day functions of the Transportation Department and provide leadership, guidance, and support to Facilities, and Nutritional Services departments, while working closely with the COO to ensure successful collaboration in meeting the district mission.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Implement strategic plans to increase efficiency and effectiveness of the district and its operations departments.
- Develop and maintain budgets, reviewing expenses, cutting costs and implementing
efficiency measures.
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of and ensure compliance with federal, state, and
local laws, regulations, guidelines, and best practices applicable to the scope of the
operations departments.
- Problem-solve and troubleshoot issues with the Directors of Operations and their
departments.
- Manage, provide effective coaching, and evaluate supervisory staff within the Operations
department.
- Support, plan, and meet with the Transportation, Physical Properties, and
Nutritional Services Departments to ensure appropriate direction in meeting the district
goals.
- Work in collaboration with Operations Directors in supporting and guiding the effective
development of procedures in alignment with board policies for the Transportation,
Physical Properties, and Nutritional Services Departments.
- Attend Board of Education meetings. When necessary, provide updates and
presentations to the Board of Education.
- Oversee and collaborate with the district Boundary and Naming Committees and their
stakeholders.
- Demonstrate high levels of proficiency in leadership behaviors and professional
deportment.
- Perform other related duties as directed by the Chief Operating Officer (COO).
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Operations Management, Education or
related field; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in operations management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
- Proven track record of driving operational improvements and achieving results.
- Strong financial acumen with experience managing budgets and analyzing financial
statements.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to think strategically and execute tactically.
COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION: Maintains communication with school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Functions of the job include: pertinent laws, codes, policies, and/or regulations; personnel processes; curriculum adoption process; program planning and development; and learning styles and curriculum models. Ability is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment.
