LOCATION: Kansas City Kansas Public Schools
The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students. With a Head Start program, three preschools, 29 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, the district serves a wonderfully diverse mixture of students. A remarkable 62 different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. To serve those students, the district employs approximately 3,650 staff, including more than 1,600 teachers.

JOB GOAL: In the absence of the classroom teacher, the Substitute Teacher enables each student to pursue his or her education as consistently and completely as possible by providing instruction, encouraging student progress and managing the learning environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Adheres to the curriculum and lesson plans assigned by the regular classroom teacher.
- Manages the learning environment by handling non-instructional tasks efficiently, using instructional time appropriately, maintaining an effective physical setting for instruction and maintaining appropriate student behavior in the classroom.
- Adheres to all district rules, regulations and policies.
- Reports daily activities at conclusion of the teaching day.
- Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in the fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.
- Ability to move around the room in order to effectively monitor student work and behavior.
- Possess the patience, caring and desire needed to work with the students and parents to see that each student has the opportunity to succeed.
- Take attendance and keep attendance registers, according to Board policy.
- Be courteous and professional at all times.
- Maintain a neat and professional appearance.
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Meets the employment qualifications set forth by the Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education and the Kansas State Department of Education.
- Hold, or have the ability to obtain, a Professional, Standard, or Emergency Substitute license issued by the Kansas State Department of Education. This includes the TEAL (Temporary Emergency Authorized License for January 2022 - June 1, 2022)
- Minimum of 60 earned college credit hours is required or meet TEAL license requirements. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Successful completion of all assigned KCKPS Substitute Teacher Training.
- Prior teaching experience is preferred.
COMMUNICATION
Maintains communication with teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action which will meet the educational needs of students.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, stand and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must occasionally push items of 50 pounds such as pushing on a bike or wheelchair, or moving/rearranging furniture. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 186 days
SALARY: $150 Daily ($20 per hour)
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
REPORT TO: Building Principal and Human Resources Advisor
EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board of Education policy
